Most parents know that there’s no secret special recipe to an unforgettable family holiday. Keeping the kids happy is what it’s all about… so here are a few suggestions to get you started!
1. Walk with the Romans… or try a scary ghost walk!
Follow in the footsteps of Hollywood star Tom Hanks who took his family on the Original Lincoln Ghost Walk during filming in the city. There are also great Ghost Walks at Epworth, Barton or Brigg too. For something more historic, follow the Roman Trail in Lincoln or walk the Medieval Walls of Lincoln Castle.
2. Get locked up… or dress up as a monk
Come face to face with convicts and hear their stories at the imposing Lincoln Castle Victorian Prison or dress up as a monk at Thornton Abbey. Maybe a princess a knight is more your style? Then head for Play at The Collection in Lincoln.
3. Spills and thrills…
For families who like their attractions with a little more adrenaline, try one of our theme parks. Experience white knuckle rides and non-stop thrills at Fantasy Island and Pleasure Island coastal theme parks.
4. Down on the farm..,
Who can resist those cute ‘n’ cuddly farm animals, play areas and often great produce too, Try Rand Farm Park, an all weather attraction, or the wonderfully-named The Pink Pig, with new indoor play area plus outdoor fun, while Hardys Animal Farm is set in acres of countryside, yet just 10 minutes walk from the beach.
5. Start your engines…
On Your Marques is a collection of toy cars plus toy car racing, while the Bubblecar Museum is one of the UK’s most unusual motor museums. We’re also home to the world's largest collection of historic trolleybuses at the Trolleybus Museum and the Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum has over 60 vehicles.
6. Banish boredom at a historic house…
Who said historic homes are dull? From ‘Horrible History’-style family tours at Burghley House to the outdoor Adventure Playground at Belton House, refurbished for 2015, Or try the family cycle trail at Grimsthorpe Castle and, for 2015, discover more of the park’s secrets on a special early evening guided cycling tour.
7. Bring history to life…
We’re blessed with centuries of history, but it’s not about dusty old books here! Take the History Hunter trail at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life or join special family events at Gainsborough Old Hall. Discover how the land was worked from the 19th century at Normanby Hall Country Park Farming Museum.
8. Get a-MAZE-ingly lost…
Sorry, we couldn’t resist! But we do have some amazing maze family experiences, including Maze In Maize – yes, it’s actually made out of maize – and one of the largest in the UK. You can also get lost in Wragby Maze on your next family day out, a must see for family fun and games.
9. Head to the deep sea… on dry land
Experience the sights, sound and smells of life on a trawler with a fascinating insight into maritime history at Grimsby’s Fishing Heritage Centre. Sign up for a trip back to the 1950s. From reconstructions of Grimsby’s back streets walk on to The Ross Tiger Trawler for a recreation of a voyage with authentic aromas and moving deck.
10. Let off steam…
Real steam that is! Re-live the golden days of rail at Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway - the last narrow gauge steam railway on the East Coast – or Lincolnshire Wolds Railway, a family friendly line offering a great day out. For model trains, visit Gainsborough Model Railway, one of the largest of its kind in the country.
