Land claimed from the waters – sail it and see.
Much was submerged thousands of years ago. Man rescued good land from the swamps by digging drains - and later the canals. First Roman, then Dutch, finally British engineers in the Industrial Revolution created a vast waterways infrastructure. Fertile land and a transport network!
Great rivers brought wealth. The Trent, Witham, Welland and Ancholme. Towns grew on the wealth the water brought. Boston, Spalding, Gainsborough, Brigg, Lincoln… merchants and their businesses prospered here since the 14th Century.
Take a boat journey through these towns – or cruise leisurely around the colourful countryside, and you’ll see things from a different perspective. Natural beauty, a countryside kaleidoscope, wildlife – and man’s influence on the land.
Locks, bridges and boats. A fascinating outlook at an unhurried pace.
Enjoy Lincolnshire’s unique charm from the water. Many miles of the network is navigable and there are plans to open up the waterways still more.
Take a waterborne break. Hire a narrowboat, or cruiser – or bring your own boat. There’s mooring and marina facilities, places to eat and everything else you might need close at hand.
See windmills, go fishing, moor at a waterside pub – or stop off and stock up with fresh Lincolnshire foods at a weekly market. Enjoy the wildlife that thrives by the water. And be amazed in the evening with the spectacular sunset in the big Lincolnshire sky.
