  The Deepings

Along the Welland they settled.

There are four communities nestling along the River Welland east of Stamford: these are The Deepings, historic settlements which grew up along the fertile lands by the river which in a previous age was an important thoroughfare to the Wash.

Market Deeping guards the gateway into Lincolnshire from the south, with Deeping St James, Deeping Gate and West Deeping standing by. More an important route for tourists rather than trade today, The Deepings are pleasant, unassuming centres of activity from where you can take in the nearby countryside.

The natural stone architecture is warm and soft on the eye with some fine buildings and ancient churches. Market Deeping has old coaching inns bordering the market place, their arched entrances harking back to the great days of coaching.

The days when The Welland was one of England’s busiest waterways are now long gone. Ducks drift along the river, people stroll and dream. There were times when the river was busy, the bargees and workers unwinding during rowdy nights - you can still see the drunks’ lock-up near the ancient market cross in Deeping St James.

It is peaceful now, and pleasant too.
