  Holbeach

Holbeach is an ancient market town - the third largest in the Lincolnshire Fens.

Land reclamation of the Middle Ages means Holbeach is also the largest parish in Lincolnshire - and one of the largest in the whole country. Settlements such as Holbeach St Marks and Holbeach St Matthew emerged around the Wash. Moulton Seas End, once on the coast, is now six miles inland!

Past prosperity, built on the fertility of the surrounding silt lands, is exemplified by the town’s splendid 14th Century Parish Church of All Saints. Here you will find an exhibition telling the story of Holbeach. The breathtaking St Mary Magdalene Church – 'the Cathedral of the Fens', in nearby Gedney - is also not to be missed.

Market days in the town are still held twice weekly and there are several interesting independent shops in the High Street, together with some fine old pubs and eating places.

Holbeach is also the birthplace of the antiquary, physician and Anglican priest, William Stukeley, and Nobel Prize winner, Norman Angel - who's 18th century house is in the High Street.

Holbeach itself is regularly commended in the Britain in Bloom awards and has been voted amongst the 'Best Kept Villages' in Lincolnshire. Be sure to look out for the Church Flower Festivals - that many of the local churches take part in - during Spring and Summer.
