    Crowland

Crowland, the gateway to the Fens, lies on the southern border of Lincolnshire.

The town dates back to the 7th Century, when the surrounding area was entirely marsh and wetland, with a series of isolated and inhospitable islands. It was on one such island, known as Croyland, that St Guthlac landed in 699AD. A small church and hermitage was established - which was to later become Croyland Abbey.

Today only part of the Abbey remains, although this is still in use as the towns Parish Church. The surrounding ruins however, still give an indication of the great edifice which could be seen here in the past.

Crowland is also home to the unique Triangular (Trinity) Bridge. Dating back to the 14th Century, when the streets were waterways, the bridge was built to span three streams - hence its three arches.

Take a town walk, and see a variety of other period buildings and thatched cottages, or maybe a stroll beside the canal - known locally as 'the lake' - ideal for picnics, walking and fishing. Remember to look out for signs of the Abbey stone in the cottages, barns and walls, and see if you can spot the cup and saucer in the thatch of the Market Café Tearooms!

Crowland is also home to the new Wyevale Garden Centre – their largest Centre in the country – where you're sure to find something for everyone.
