Whilst Ely is dominated by its magnificent Cathedral - which is a must for any visitor - it also has other attractions including the beautiful riverside where boats can be hired to navigate the fenland waterways, or just enjoy a riverside walk. Stop for a drink at a riverside Inn or sit in Jubilee Gardens, which offer views of the river and the Cathedral. On Waterside you will find the National award winning Peacocks’ Tea Room. A riverside walk takes in the newly refurbished Maltings Restaurant, The Cutter Inn and The Boathouse Restaurant.
The Fenland Gîte is also a good base for visiting Cambridge (16 miles) with its many historic Universities, or for punting along the backs. Newmarket (14 miles), the home of horse racing, has two "flat" racecourses where the classic One Thousand and Two Thousand Guineas are run. Newmarket also holds a series of summer evening race meetings on Fridays, followed by an open-air concert featuring a variety of top bands.
Other notable attractions in the area are Wicken Fen nature reserve (10 miles), Welney Wildfowl Trust (11 miles) and Anglesey Abbey, a National Trust historic house and gardens (20 miles). Ely is also well placed for a day out at the seaside at the East Coast resort of Hunstanton (43 miles) or picturesque Holkham beach (57 miles).
