King's Lynn

King's Lynn is a treasure of things to discover. It has always been a major port in the Fens. In the 15th century the Hanseatic League traded from here. The wealth of the town was created by the trading opportunities brought about by the port. This affluence can be seen in the quality of the buildings which include grand churches, two guildhalls and two market places.

The town has plenty to offer in the way of visitor attractions, with three museums, an interactive Wash Discovery Centre and the Old Gaol House which is a 1930’s police station complete with 200 year old cells and stories of highwaymen and smugglers.

The 17th century Custom House on the quayside has fascinating displays about the merchants, customs men and smugglers of old Lynn. True’s Yard Museum is another attraction with a maritime theme. The building was originally two fishermen’s cottages which are all that remain of Lynn’s North End fishing community. The museum captures the harsh realities of fishing life and the traditions and spirit of the close-knit community.

The Corn Exchange on the Tuesday Market Place offers a wide range of entertainment from stand up comics to big bands and flea markets to toy fairs, while the Arts Centre has many cultural opportunities. Kings Lynn celebrates the Arts throughout the summer months with festivals of music, poetry and fiction.

King's Lynn is a good centre for shopping with a mix of well known high street names and independent stores. A recent redevelopment has increased the variety of shops on offer while the traditional markets held on Tuesday and Saturday sell a wide range of local produce.
