Walking

The Fens are an exceptional destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Nowhere else in England gives you the sense of space that you will find walking around the Fens. Its vastness is only broken by the odd line of poplar trees, these being the best wind break when where are no hills or houses. You will not walk far without a church spire appearing on the horizon. Religion played an important role in the lives of the Fen people with many churches being built on a grand scale.

Walking in the Fens

Walking is done at an easy pace in the Fens. This is an area for gentle enjoyment with quiet lanes and peaceful pathways. East of England Tourism claims that "it's the beauty that will take your breath away, not the hills" and they are right. Any hills that you may come across are small ones and, because the area is relatively flat the skyscapes and sunsets can be truly spectacular.

The stunning sunsets and scenery in the Fens have long been the inspiration for local artists. Many of the towns have galleries where you can view paintings and locally made crafts.
