South Kesteven's largest town built its wealth on transport. The Great North Road from London passed through, and then came canals and the railways, Grantham prospered. A fascinating red brick stone old town with a high steepled 12th century church, Grantham is home to two iconic Britons, scientist Sir Isaac Newton and the UK’s first woman prime Minister Margaret Thatcher – both featured in the Town Museum. Once an important staging post on the Great North Road, it boasts a wealth of old Inns including the George mentioned in Charles Dickens' novel, Nicholas Nickleby.
