Lincoln
The Fossdyke is thought to be the oldest canal in England still in use today. Roman engineers dug this canal almost 2000 years ago to link the River Trent at Torksey to the River Witham at Lincoln and thereby to the sea at Boston. It was probably used to transport military supplies and food from the rich farmland of the Fens to feed Roman soldiers.
Over the centuries barges and packet boats have carried other goods and travellers along this ancient canal. Today, the Fossdyke can be enjoyed for boating, walking and fishing, or just simply for the pleasure of sitting beside it and enjoying the view.
