    Details

A visit to this impressive grade 1 listed Queen Anne building set in beautiful gardens will transport you back into early 18th century life and introduce you to the remarkable family who lived here.

This is the home in which the rector of Epworth, Samuel Wesley, and his wife Susanna brought up their sons John and Charles Wesley (the founders of Methodism) in their childhood years, along with their seven sisters. As you tour the Old Rectory under the guidance of one of our trained guides you will see how people lived in the early 1700s: come through the front door into the impressive entrance hall, visit Samuel's study and Susanna's kitchen, enjoy the space of the family drawing room, see the family bedrooms, the nursery and the famous attic room known as 'Jeffrey’s Chamber' and then spend some time in the peaceful gardens. Look out for the Physic Garden where plants are growing which John Wesley used in his book 'Primitive Physic' containing home-spun cures.

There are many events and special activities, including craft fairs, a schools' programme, quiet days and guided 'walks with Wesley' around the town of Epworth. We can offer catering for groups, please book in advance.

The market town of Epworth lies just off the A161 Goole to Gainsborough road. It is three miles south of the M180 junction 2 and twelve miles north of Gainsborough.

From the south turn right off the A161 after the town sign, turn right at the next crossroads and straight ahead at the next junction. The Rectory is on the left.

From the north turn left off the A161 after the town sign and drive straight on through the town. Continue past the market cross on your right and the Red Lion on your left and drive up Albion Hill. The road bends to the right and then to the left and the Rectory's high brick wall is on the left. The Rectory is on the left at the top of the hill.
