Alfred Lord Tennyson
Timeless poetry
‘Tis better to have loved and lost; than never to have loved at all’
Born in 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire, Alfred Lord Tennyson is perhaps the most famous of Lincolnshire’s literary sons and daughters. The Tennyson Research Centre at Lincoln Central Library is the most significant collection relating to Tennyson in the world, containing books and artefacts of interest to researchers and anyone wanting an insight into the poet, his life and times.

Although the Centre is by appointment only, there is a fascinating collection of Tennyson memorabilia in the main part of the library.
Visiting the places associated with Tennyson provides a unique insight into his life and the times and places he knew. If your own Lincolnshire heritage dates from the 19th century then there is much to be learned from Tennyson, illuminating your personal heritage. For more information look at the Lincolnshire County Council web site, where there is an informative Tennyson Trail leaflet that will introduce you to the Lincolnshire the poet knew.
