Waterways
Everybody loves to be beside the water and where better than Lincolnshire to enjoy the riverside scene? Lincolnshire’s heritage is bound up in its huge network of rivers, canals and drains. We can thank the Romans for the Fossdyke Canal and the Brayford Pool at Lincoln and in medieval times Boston and Lincoln harnessed the River Witham for transport and saw their wealth grow. The 18th century fen drainage changed the map of Lincolnshire and the East Coast Floods of 1953 formed our attitudes to flood defence.
The Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership (LWP) is British Waterways, the Environment Agency and Lincolnshire County Council. Since 2003 the Partnership has been working on the regeneration of Lincolnshire’s river corridors. £14m of works have been completed, £2m is still in delivery and the LWP has even bigger plans for the future. The Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership was formed between Lincolnshire County Council (LCC), British Waterways (BW) and the Environment Agency (EA) in 2003. Both BW and EA have navigation responsibilities in Lincolnshire.
