Mud & Stud Cottages?

Mud & Stud Cottage, Thimbleby near Horncastle
Fiskerton Fen

Did you Know?

Mud and Stud is a type of construction exclusive to Lincolnshire and now very rare. Unlike most historic timber frame constructions, mud and stud walls don’t have externally exposed timber. The walls are covered with a thick layer of earth mixed with chopped straw and a limewash seals the exterior and the roof is usually thatched.

Valued for their cheapness, durability and sustainability, in the past mud and stud cottages required no professional builders for construction. There are several mud and stud cottages available as holiday lets in Lincolnshire, there is even a bird hide at Fiskerton Fen Nature Reserve built in the mud and stud style!
