steel town with industrial heritage
A true garden town that evolved from five small villages with the development of the steel industry. Scunthorpe came into existence due to the mining of the local ironstone which began in 1859, iron production commenced in 1864 and steel smelting in 1891. The Appleby Frodingham Railway are a preservation society who run railtours around the internal 100 mile railway system of the Scunthorpe British Steel site, one of the largest in the country. Passengers are carried in brake vans and are not suitable for young children.
