Alkborough Flats, near Scunthorpe

steel town with industrial heritage

A true garden town that evolved from five small villages with the development of the steel industry. Scunthorpe came into existence due to the mining of the local ironstone which began in 1859, iron production commenced in 1864 and steel smelting in 1891. The Appleby Frodingham Railway are a preservation society who run railtours around the internal 100 mile railway system of the Scunthorpe British Steel site, one of the largest in the country. Passengers are carried in brake vans and are not suitable for young children.

Normanby Hall is a Regency mansion set in 300 acres of lovely grounds on the edge of Scunthorpe. The Victorian walled garden is particularly popular. Go Ape at Normanby Hall features Treetop Challenge and Treetop Adventure, two high rope experiences above the forest floor.

Alkborough Flats

Alkborough Flats Nature Reserve nine miles from Scunthorpe is a very rewarding site for keen birdwatchers, rare glossy ibis have been spotted here. It consists of massive reedbeds and extensive areas of wet grassland. The list of birds recorded on the Flats exceeds 200 species. Many are resident throughout the year. Spring and summer sees the arrival of breeding birds, spring and autumn passage periods produce arrivals of a wide variety of waders. Winters are dominated by vast starling roosts in the reedbeds, large flocks of lapwings and golden plover, barnacle and pink-footed geese. Visit Julian’s Bower turf cut maze which overlooks the Humber Estuary and the Alkborough Flats nature reserve. It is one of only eight surviving turf mazes in the country.
