Caistor

Caistor, Fountain Street

historic market town on the Viking Way with Roman heritage

Situated at the northern edge of the Wolds, the town of Caistor is popular with walkers with the Viking Way running through the town.

Caistor is a Roman fortified town with traces of the walls surviving. Settlers had been here since prehistoric times no doubt attracted by the well-known springs, famous for never failing even in the worst droughts.  The hillside town was ravaged by fire in 1681and the present buildings date from then. The street pattern is based on a series of interconnecting squares; Market Place, Butter Market, Cornhill and Horse Market suggesting former agricultural prosperity. St Peter and St Paul sits on a steep slope and this fine church thankfully survived the fire.

Nearby you can find the villages of Nettleton, with its Ironstone mining history, Claxby and Grasby. There are a number of fishing lakes plus a wide range of events that take place throughout the year.

things to do

Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre

The Caistor Arts and Heritage Centre is a beautiful conversion of a former Methodist chapel dating from 1867. This was achieved through a very dedicated volunteer team, financial help from the BIG Lottery Fund, filmed by the BBC for a programme called Village SOS and with advice from Sarah Beany, who knows a thing or two about restorations. The Centre features a great café, local history displays and changing exhibitions.

Viking Way

The Viking Way is a long distance 147 mile trail from the Humber Bridge through Lincoln to Rutland. The Viking Way goes through the centre of Caistor and the walk ‘Caistor to Tealby’ is one of the loveliest sections with both valley and hill scenery. It crosses the highest ground in Lincolnshire and includes the Ramblers Church which sits high above the village of Walesby. The church stands on the edge of an escarpment with far reaching views across the Wolds, on a good day Lincoln Cathedral can be seen 20 miles away. A stained glass window depicting walkers was donated by local ramblers in 1951.
