Wragby

St Giles, Langton by Wragby

traditional market town close to the Wolds and coast

Wragby is an historic market town at the junction of the A157 and A158, so it is a popular stop off for those on their way to the coast or to the Wolds. There is a traditional butcher, a number of independent shops and a variety of place to eat.

Wragby was first granted three annual fairs and a market in 1668. All Saints’ was built in 1839, an earlier church stood nearby of which there are no visible remains.

A mile away is Langton by Wragby and Archbishop Stephen Langton, a key figure in 13th century England originated from this tiny village. Langton Manor, set within its moat, dates from 1841, but may occupy the site of Stephen Langton’s birthplace.

Born around 1150, Stephen Langton played a key negotiating role between King John and the Barons which culminated in the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215. He also organised the books of the bible into the chapters we know today.
