And it was Lincolnshire soldier-of-fortune Captain John Smith who played a leading role in the journey of discovery that led to the New World. While John Smith will forever be linked with the story of Pocahontas. His historic trail began in the Lincolnshire village of Willoughby, Alford where he was born and christened – the font is still there today – and ended with him becoming President of Virginia.
