Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson?

Lincolnshire poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson was probably the first poet to gain fame and fortune in his own lifetime. He was hero worshipped to such a degree that he was completely plagued by sightseers peering in through his windows and lurking at his gate. Born at Somersby in the Lincolnshire Wolds in 1809 where his father was the rector, schooled in Louth, Tennyson was one of 11 children and the family were considered eccentric. They roamed far and wide, day and night, Alfred began writing poetry at an early age and he was often seen rambling local lanes mumbling to himself. The Tennyson family were very early adopters of the seaside holiday when it was still thought a very odd thing to do, they went to stay in a cottage at Mablethorpe each year. Today a statue of Tennyson can be found on the green next to Lincoln Cathedral.
