If there’s one thing we do well in Lincolnshire, it’s throwing a good festival! From lively arts in Skegness to music-filled forests and stunning walks through the Wolds, there’s something here for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned local or a first-time visitor. Here’s a peek at three of the best festivals in the county – the ones that make you fall in love with Lincolnshire all over again.
3. SO Festival, Skegness
For art lovers, families, and anyone looking to experience culture in a unique setting.
If you’re on the Lincolnshire coast in summer, SO Festival is a must-see! Spanning three days across the seaside towns of Skegness and Mablethorpe, this free, international arts festival is a feast for the senses, offering everything from theatre and puppetry to dance, comedy, music, acrobatics, and even immersive art installations. Each performance is crafted to transport you from the everyday and plunge you into a journey of pure discovery.
It’s not just the amazing performances that make SO Festival special. There’s something exhilarating about seeing such talent—both from the UK and around the globe—against the beautiful backdrop of our coastline, with outdoor stages set up on pavements, parks, and promenades. Last year, I saw dancers spinning and leaping in the park, puppet shows that had both kids and adults captivated, and a comedy act that left us all in stitches. It’s the sort of experience where you’re swept into the energy of the crowd, feeling like you’re part of something truly magical.
But here’s what I love even more: SO Festival doesn’t just vanish after those three days. They work year-round to support our local creatives, offering workshops, masterclasses, and digital creative practices. There’s a real emphasis on building connections with Lincolnshire’s cultural organizations, helping to upskill and engage our community all year long. This isn’t just about bringing in talent; it’s about growing it right here at home.
The festival’s collaborative spirit runs deep. Working alongside Jens Frimann Hansen, the Danish Artistic Director, SO Festival is driven by a European flair for community engagement, connecting Lincolnshire with world-renowned festivals like Helsingør Teater in Denmark and PASSAGE Festival in Denmark and Sweden. This international influence is clear in the unique programming and in how they work with the local Community Programme Team to co-create art that truly speaks to us as locals.
Every year, SO Festival seems to get more resonant, more relevant. And I have to say, there’s nothing quite like standing in the middle of Skegness, surrounded by art and laughter, and feeling such pride in what our little corner of the world can offer. It’s one of those experiences you can’t find anywhere else – and it’s right here in Lincolnshire, waiting for you to join in.
2. Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival
For outdoors lovers, walkers, and adventure-seekers of all ages.
The Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival is an absolute gem of an event, a two-week celebration of all that the Lincolnshire Wolds have to offer. Set against the backdrop of the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the festival invites locals and visitors alike to step outside, breathe in that fresh country air, and dive into over 100 events and activities. From nature walks to adventure sports, there’s something for everyone to enjoy—and many activities are free or at a reduced cost, making it easy for everyone to join in.
When I went last year, I found myself doing things I’d never even thought of trying before. One day, I joined a group for a guided hike, taking in breathtaking views and spotting local wildlife. The guides were brilliant, pointing out rare plants and sharing the history of the area. On another day, I tried my hand at a bit of archery—something I’d always wanted to try—and honestly, I surprised myself by hitting the target a few times!
The festival brings out a wonderful mix of activities across the Wolds, from horse riding and fishing to navigation workshops, dancing, and gliding. I spotted a family learning basic orienteering, teens heading off for a climbing adventure, and friends having a relaxed afternoon painting in the fields. There was even a line-dancing session, right out in the open, where folks of all ages were having a good laugh, dancing with a view of rolling hills and big blue skies. I saw people bringing their dogs along for special “dog-friendly” hikes, and I’d say it’s hard to tell who was having more fun—the people or the pups!
But beyond the activities, there’s something about this festival that gives you a sense of inner peace. Walking through the scenic hills, meeting new people, and learning new skills—it’s a chance to slow down, connect with nature, and find a bit of quiet in our busy lives. And yet, there’s also a vibrant social side to it, with so many friendly folks sharing stories and tips on the best hidden spots around the Wolds.
For anyone looking to experience the beauty of Lincolnshire in all its natural glory, the Wolds Outdoor Festival is an unbeatable experience. Whether you’re looking for some outdoor exercise, hoping to meet like-minded people, or just wanting to get back to nature, this festival offers the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and community in the stunning surroundings of the Wolds. Honestly, it’s an event that captures everything I love about living here.
1. Lost Village Festival - My Absolute Favourite!
For music lovers, experience seekers, and those craving an immersive, unforgettable weekend.
I’m always on the lookout for new things to do in Lincolnshire. I’d like to think that I have covered quite a lot of ground and been to most corners of this county in my years. This August Bank Holiday Weekend was quite the exception though as, for the very first time, I experienced the absolute spectacle that is Lost Village.
Hidden away in a forest on the edge of Lincolnshire, many visitors will have driven past the location of this festival, none the wiser. It’s a stone’s throw from one of the main routes into the county. Little would they realise that once a year, this area transforms into a mecca for music lovers and welcomes thousands of festival goers from all over the world. I’ve been to a few smaller festivals in my time, but nothing on this scale. Wow – it was worth the wait. Lost Village is so much more than a music festival. The themed ‘sets’ built around the forest are outstanding. The attention to detail makes you just stand and stare. We walked from the ‘scrap yard’ through a street scape, to a clearing in the woods literally surrounded by abandoned aircraft and paraphernalia. Each of these is home to a packed program of world-class DJs. No wonder this event draws loyal followers back year after year.
I’d say festival goers ranged from 18 to 80 and everything in between – we saw groups of friends, couples, family gatherings. The atmosphere was everything! Exciting, warm, fun, vibrant. Everything we imagined and more.
But what is very clear from the moment you walk into the experience is that it’s not just about the music (excellent though it is). Meeting places and stages host crafting sessions, TED talks, comedians, all brimming with people and crackling with energy. The food – oh my goodness – the food. So much choice from street food on the go, to fine dining nestled amongst the trees. We loved it.
What a joyful event for our county to host. Perhaps not your first thought when you think of a weekend away in Lincolnshire – but Lost Village will welcome you with open arms. Forward thinking, inclusive, crazy, immersive. Here’s to 2025 – see you there.
