13th June 2024

Louth and District Concert Society presents Hugh Mackay and Michael Pandya in recital.

Claude Debussy Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor, L135
Johann Sebastian Bach Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008
Ludwig van Beethoven Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 4 in C major, Op. 102, No. 1
Johannes Brahms Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 2 in F major, Op. 99

Join the audience at St James' church in Louth this evening to be immersed in the sensual sound-world of violoncello and grand piano. Step into the elysian glades of Debussy’s D minor gem of a work, sharing with Beethoven’s late masterpiece a playful, pastoral landscape interspersing twinkling brooks with open pastures for quiet reflection. The behemoth of Brahms F major sonata encompasses an heroic opening, an affectionate slow movement, a tonic minor allegro appassionato full of bravura, and concludes with another nod to the bucolic, a graceful rondo.  In contrast, you will also hear the concentrated beauty of Bach's 2nd Suite for Solo Cello in his devotional key of D minor.

The 2022 Suggia Gift recipient, a Dewar Arts Award winner and former Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund scholarship holder, Scottish cellist Hugh Mackay is establishing himself as an independently minded young artist drawing inspiration from across musical eras and a broad range of artistic collaborations. His vibrant musical life denotes an eclectic range of performing styles and repertoire, from the inception of the cello to the present day, and he is noted for his inspired and provocative programming. An avid chamber musician, Hugh has collaborated with leading artists such as Lawrence Power and the Doric String Quartet. He made his concerto debut with the Bremer Philharmoniker in 2021 performing Schumann’s Cello Concerto in the Dortmund Konzerthaus and Die Glocke Bremen. He is currently based in London, UK.
