Boston’s Story in Stitch

19th Jul 2024
25th Jul 2024

Come and discover Boston's unique Story in Stitch: the story of Boston's rich history and present stitched into four giant storybooks.

Boston's Story In Stitch is a collection of magical picture books that depict Boston's rich history and landscape through the medium of textile and stitch.

Local textile group The Boston Stitchers have spent the last five years creating this series of giant storybooks, each nearly two feet tall, using a combination of traditional and contemporary embroidery techniques to tell the story of Boston throughout the ages.

Hundreds of Bostonians were involved in the project by sewing two inch squares for the books - many never having sewn before - with the oldest being in her late eighties, and the youngest being under five.

The books pay tribute to famous local landmarks such as St. Botolph's Church (the Stump) and the RSPB's Frampton Marsh, Boston's central role in trade, agriculture and exploration, and, of course, the part the town has played in the building of the new Boston, in Massachusetts, U.S.A. From our past to the current day these picture books, a project funded by Boston Big Local, tell a unique tale.

An exhibition of The Boston Stitchers' work will also be displayed at Fydell House during opening hours throughout July from 3rd. Please note that the storybooks will only be available to view on the four dates above.

Don't miss this opportunity to witness Boston come alive through the art of stitch.
