Did you know that the first American Colonial Astronomer, Arthur Storer, was a pupil at King’s School Grantham and a life-long friend of Sir Isaac Newton – or that Anne Hutchinson, born in Alford and a Puritan, established the settlement of Portsmouth, Rhode Island?

Lincolnshire is home to a myriad of Explorers and Innovators all of whom have made a significant contribution in a variety of fields. The Society of Lincolnshire History & Archaeology (SLHA) are holding a full day Conference in Grantham on the 6th September on the theme of Lincolnshire Explorers and Innovators. Talks will include: George Bass: Eighteenth century Explorer by Penny Herdman, Sir Joseph Banks: Agrarian to Industrialist by Paul Scott, Arthur Storer - America's First Colonial Astronomer by Ruth Crook, Richard Hill (1795-1892) Abolitionist and Naturalist Presented by Prof. Heather Hughes and Anne Hutchinson and Her Lincolnshire Friends: by Adrian Gray. To conclude the event, a selection of Lincolnshire Explorers and Innovators will be celebrated through a variety of music, stories and songs, you may even get the chance to join in if you so wish!
