did you know?
The Petwood Hotel has a fascinating history.
Wealthy heiress Baroness Grace van Eckhardstein, after a painful divorce longed for a country retreat. Her father bequeathed her the money for the house which she set about building in the wood or her “pet wood” as she called it. The bungalow first proposed in 1905 didn’t meet her lavish tastes and the house became a grand affair of Tudor and Jacobean styles complete with “elaborate oak features” within. In 1910 Grace married again to the politician Sir Archibald Weigall. Aristocrats, MP’s, music hall stars and sporting greats were all entertained here in great style. In the First World War the Petwood became a military convalescence hospital and in 1933 it became a hotel. The gardens were as fine as the house and designed by landscape architect Harold Peto. Today the immaculately maintained gardens are open to the public all year. They were restored in 2011 to Peto’s original design. There is also 30 acres of woodland which include the rhododendron walk, a picture in late spring.
