Doddington Hall is delighted to host the Bourn Collection of Winston Churchill memorabilia in the Stable Yard Gallery.
Discover a unique perspective on the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill with this compelling exhibition, featuring a wide-ranging collection of Churchill memorabilia from the distinguished Bourn Collection – a private family collection, not open to the public. Marking the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston’s birth in November 1874 and the 60th anniversary of his passing in January 1965, this exhibition brings history to life in a truly remarkable way.
“We are all worms, but I do believe that I am a glow-worm.” – Winston Churchill
Sir Winston’s legacy lives on in the modern world he helped shape. He was a soldier, painter, writer, politician and family man; both a participant and chronicler of great events. Rather than a chronological account, this curated selection offers an intimate and personal glimpse into Churchill’s enduring impact through photographs from the Churchill Family Archive, paintings, commemorative ceramic and metal busts, memorabilia and even a Madame Tussauds waxwork.
The Collector – Hugh Bourn, OBE 1929 – 2014
Hugh Bourn was a successful farmer and property developer. He was intellectually curious, very well-travelled and interested in history. In 1998 he first bought a Royal Doulton figure of Churchill and continued to collect for the rest of his life, buying more important items from London auctioneers. Hugh’s collection was kept at home and has never been on public display. The items on display represent a small part of his total collection. Hugh attributed his interest in Churchill directly to the sense of confidence and leadership that Churchill provided as Prime Minister to Hugh as a schoolboy during the Second World War.
