Enjoy a rare feast of the Italian choral repertoire, Verismo! at Lincoln Cathedral. The concert, performed by the Lincoln Choral Society in Italian, is also accompanied by Lincolnshire Chamber Orchestra, conducted by their Musical Director – Mark Wilde.
Puccini’s Mass was first performed in 1880 when the composer was just 20, and composed for orchestra and 4 part choir with tenor, bass and baritone soloists. The work is exhilarating and combines the excitement of youth with the fabulous melodic writing to be found later in his operas. There’s barely space for listeners to pause for breath in between one glorious tune and the next.
Beloved by opera audiences around the world, Cavalleria Rusticana is an impassioned story of tormented love wrapped in music of fervent vibrancy. Translated it means Rustic Chivalry and is set on Easter Sunday. During the Easter service in the opera the famous Easter Hymn is sung; the same melody that opens the famous intermezzo is featured a little later in the opera.
