Even in winter trees are a beautiful and striking presence in the landscape. But with many of their distinguishing characteristics – their leaves, flowers and fruits – gone, it can make it seem tricky to identify one from the next.
There are though still many clues to help tell trees apart at this time of year – from buds and bark to twigs and overall shape. Once you get your eye in you will see more and more detail, and winter walks will come alive with added interest.
This is a practical workshop that will focus on our native tree species, the types you are likely to come across in the English countryside. As well as identification skills you will also learn about some of the natural and cultural history associated with different trees.
Time spent in the classroom (approximately 1-1.5 hours) will be combined with time in the park and woodland. You will be outside whatever the weather for a further 1.5-2 hours, and walking to view trees on paths that may a bit uneven and squelchy underfoot. So appropriate footwear and clothing is essential.
A great way to blow away some New Year cobwebs!
No prior knowledge is needed, just a warm coat and boots.

Meet Your Guide
“As a garden designer for more than 15 years I have, above all, developed a passion for plants and in some ways increasingly see myself as a ‘plant advocate’. My eyes have been opened to their many qualities, not just the exquisite beauty of many, but also their fascinating characters and survival strategies, and their central role both ecologically and to our cultural heritage. Of all the plants, trees are perhaps the most powerful presence in our landscape, captivating and intriguing in equal measure, and it is this appreciation that I love to share.”
Based in Lincolnshire & Suffolk, Guy has been designing gardens and advising clients for more than 15 years throughout the East of England, and beyond, helping them to create their own green havens, from large country gardens to small town yards. Increasingly his focus is on providing advice and inspiration throughout teaching and on-site consultations.
Promoting gardens that are as sustainable as possible is a key focus, and exhibits at RHS Flower Shows over many years have demonstrated his environmental commitment – Hampton Court in 2010 (‘Human Nature’ – silver-gilt award), Hampton Court in 2009 (‘Coppice’ – silver award) and Tatton Park in 2006 (‘The Function Room’ – silver award).
Guy has worked as a garden design lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, has been a tutor with Learning with Experts and delivers a range of talk & workshops at various venues including Doddington Hall (nr. Lincoln), Sheffield Botanical Gardens and RHS Harlow Carr (nr. Harrogate). He has also worked as a project manager for the BBC series Garden Rescue and, on occasion, contributed articles to a range of magazines including The Garden and the Garden Design Journal.
