Join guide Martin Gray to discover some of the marvellous moths that call Wilder Doddington their home.
Come and learn about moths, the role they play in nature’s complex web of life, and how you can help them. Wilder Doddington are recording increasingly diverse and unusual moths there as the habitat at Doddington evolves. But with over 2500 species in the UK, how do you begin to identify them?
Moths are fascinating creatures known for their delicately feathered antennae and diverse and intricate range of patterns and colours. They exhibit a wide range of hues, from subtle browns and greys to vibrant reds, yellows, and even blues, with the striking patterns on their wings serving as camouflage or deterrents against predators. This incredible variety not only helps moths survive in their environments but also makes them a subject of endless fascination for entomologists and nature enthusiasts as they use these indicators to identify different species. They are important food for birds and bats, so knowing more about moths and the food plants of their larvae helps us all to help nature.
Your guide will bring in some live catches from previous nights’ trapping along with some specimens so you are able to discover more about these incredible insects whatever the weather!
You’ll see how traps are used and find out about the research that Doddington is supporting with Rothamsted Research. In 2022 Doddington was chosen as a monitoring site for the nationwide network of around 80 light-traps that have been collecting invaluable data on the migration of moths, aphids and insect biodiversity since 1964.
Your Guide: Martin Gray is a keen local entomologist with specific expertise in moths. He is also the South Lincolnshire County Moth Recorder and Micro Moth Recorder for Nottinghamshire and has been trapping moths from his garden for 35 years.
