attractive market town often described as the ‘gateway to the Lincolnshire Wolds'
Horncastle is an attractive small market town on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. The River Bain flows through the centre of the town and St Mary’s church dates from the 13th century.
Horncastle was a fortified Roman town although it was not on any important Roman roads, suggesting that the River Bain was important for access. There are still sections of Roman wall to be seen.
The town was noted for cockfighting and bull-baiting, and there is an area in the town still known as the Bull Ring. The town gained its market charter in the 13th century and it was long known for its August Horse Fair, a week long event and probably the largest in Britain. The last one was held in 1948. The town is now known for its very many antique shops, both large and small and perfect for browsing. Horncastle is also a popular market spot. Every 2nd Thursday of the month the regular market is joined by the Farmers' Market Traders.
