Come along to experience a truly thought-provoking and sinister theatrical performance of Shakespeare’s classic play at The Broadbent Theatre this November.
“Be bloody, bold and resolute, laugh to scorn the power of man for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth”
So say the three witches to Macbeth who, with ‘predictions’ like these, fool Macbeth and, of course, bring nothing but harm and destruction. In this classic Shakespearean tragedy we see their supernatural hold on Macbeth leading to tension, fear and betrayal as his murderous behaviour escalates.
Shakespeare wrote this enduringly popular play in the time of King James I who had just produced his own book to warn of witches and justify any means to hunt them down – fervently believing his own life was in imminent danger from them.
At this time, when supernatural powers were genuinely feared, what better than a tale of evil done by those who tempt people down a dark path and seek to undermine their sense of right and wrong? Not only do victims suffer but we see the perpetrators consequently losing their minds.
Of course, these days we would laugh to scorn the power of witches. Wouldn’t we?
